    About Brook Trout in Wisconsin

Brook Trout are Wisconsin's only native trout, a jewel of the cold, spring-fed streams that thread through the Driftless Region and the Northwoods. Their worm-like vermiculations and red-spotted flanks make them one of the most beautiful fish in freshwater.

Brookies require cold, clean, well-oxygenated water, so they're found in spring creeks, beaver ponds and cool Northwoods lakes. They feed on insects, small baitfish and crustaceans. While most brook trout are caught on flies and small spinners, lake-dwelling brookies will eat small soft plastics fished on light line.

Country Cave Baits specializes in warmwater soft plastics, but our 3 Inch Split Tail Minnow and micro panfish baits can be a change-of-pace offering for lake-dwelling brook trout. Injection-poured in Fall River, Wisconsin.

    Fishing Techniques for Brook Trout

Cast a Split Tail Minnow in Lakes

In lake environments, cast a 3 Inch Split Tail Minnow on a light jig near inlet springs and drop-offs. Brook trout will eat the small flickering profile.

    Use Light Line and Stealth

Brook trout are wary. Use light line, long casts and a stealthy approach on clear spring-fed waters.

    Focus on Cold-Water Inflows

Brook trout concentrate around cold springs and inlets, especially in summer. Target these zones for the best action.
