About Crappie in Wisconsin

Both black and white crappie thrive in Wisconsin's lakes and flowages, from the backwaters of the Mississippi to the fertile basins of Lake Winnebago and the Northwoods. They school tightly around submerged timber, brush piles, fish cribs and deep weed edges, making them a reliable target once you locate a pod.

Crappie feed on small minnows, insects and crustaceans, which is why micro-sized soft plastics outfish larger bass baits. A tiny tube, bug or minnow imitation jigged or cast around cover can fill a livewell in a hurry. Spring brings crappie shallow to spawn; summer pushes them to suspended schools over deep water.

Country Cave Baits built the Crappie Bug and 1.2 Inch Crappie Slayer specifically for Wisconsin crappie anglers. Injection-poured in Fall River with soft, durable plastic and available in glow colors that charge in natural sunlight and glow after dark — a UV flashlight amps the glow up even brighter, deadly in stained water and after dark — they're the perfect tools for putting slabs in the boat.

Crappie Bug

The Crappie Bug is a tiny creature bait with wiggling legs and a soft, buoyant body that hovers naturally on a light jig. It's a go-to ice fishing bait too — jig it through the ice around brush and cribs for slab panfish all winter.

Fishing Techniques for Crappie

Jig a Crappie Bug Around Brush

Cast or vertical-jig a Crappie Bug on a small jig head around brush piles and cribs. The quivering tentacles trigger crappie holding tight to cover.
